For years, LED strips have been a popular DIY lighting solution for many applications. That’s why we’re so excited about the latest in LED strip technology – COB flexible strip lighting.
What is cob led strip?
In the LED world, COB is short for Chip on Board, which basically refers to packaging the LED die directly onto a circuit board (PCB).
The “chip on board” LEDs used on flexible strips are sometimes also called flip chips.
Flip chip LEDs are basically a basic approach to LED construction.
Look at a regular 5050 SMD (surface mount device) LED, which has a larger plastic reflector that encapsulates the LED diode itself, and then covers it with a phosphor coating.
The “flip chips” that make up COB LED strips eliminate everything from their design except the LED chip, the yellow phosphor covering, and the connection pads. This compact design significantly reduces the size, allowing them to be packed more tightly together and further miniaturizing LED-based lighting.
How are cob led flexible strip lights made?
These strips are manufactured using the same quality PCBs as our other LED Flex Strip lights. Flip chip LEDs are then placed side by side down the center of the strip, so tightly together that there are 512 LEDs per meter of strip! After a phosphor layer is placed over the LEDs, the strip is complete. This helps balance the color temperature while also acting as a protective layer for the tiny flip chip LEDs underneath.
Now that you have a basic understanding of how this new light technology came to be, it’s time to look at what makes them superior or better in certain strip light applications.
No LED Hot Spots, Even in Tight Spaces!
One of the biggest complaints about traditional LED flex strips is the hot spots throughout the strip.Hot spots are a term for brighter areas through the fixture or strip where you can clearly see where the light is coming from. When the light looks like one smooth source of light instead of a mess, it’s much more appealing and attractive.
With 5050 SMD Flex Strips, the larger size diodes are packed close enough so that at a certain distance the light will be dispersed and consistent across the surface being illuminated, but if the light is too close to the surface or the strip itself is visible, hot spots are an eye sore that the human eye cannot ignore.
With 512 LEDs/M in the strip, it is difficult to pick out any hot spots on the COB Flex Strip. The strip illuminates with smooth, consistent light from beginning to end. The uniform light, with no dark spots, is more appealing to the human eye and gives steady light even in the tightest of places.
In fact, the only real way to see hot spots is to look at the back of the strip, where it is easier to see the individually placed flip chip LEDs. The only other way you will see individual diodes is if the strip is dimmed to about 5% of its light output. This makes COB Flex Strips ideal for the following applications:
1. The strip itself cannot be hidden from view.
2. The surface being illuminated is within 2 feet of the strip light.
3. There are reflective surfaces such as granite/glass around. 4. Those applications where you want a cool neon effect.
Brighter Light
That's right, these cob led flexible strip lights are brighter! At 1400 lumens/meter, these are even brighter than our high-density strips!Because flip chip LEDs aren't enclosed in a plastic holder like SMD LEDs are, the consistent, bright light is also emitted at a wider angle. This allows them to emit some light from the sides so that they fan out from the strip at a 180-degree angle.
A wider light angle means more light, so that's important for brightness in the long run, too!
More Flexibility
Due to the smaller size of the diodes and even weight distribution, these strips are far more flexible than other flex strips. The diodes are so small and closely spaced that any point on the strip is identical to another. The uniformity makes it easy to set up the light strip without having to plan on having 5050 SMD LEDs sticking out where you don't want them. This added flexibility will make it easier to fit them into tight areas and corners in your application.
More Efficient, Less Heat
When packing so many LEDs in such a small space, efficiency can be questioned. However, flip chip LEDs excel in efficiency and heat transfer compared to other LEDs.They actually run at 14 watts/meter, just like our high density strips, but they put out 100 lumens per watt compared to the 75/W of the high density strips.
Since they are mounted directly on the flexible PCB board, they are also better at dissipating heat. This helps them spread the heat out into the PCB instead of locking it all up in the light source itself. The reduction in thermal resistance within the high density circuit greatly increases the life of the LED.
24V Powered Strips
COB flex strips are powered by 12/ 24VDC.This is a change from the standard, as our other flex strips are powered by 12VDC.With so many diodes packed into the circuit, the extra voltage is needed. Please note that these strips always use a 24V input. We have a large selection of 24V power supplies in a variety of styles:
Longer Run Lengths
The higher input voltage actually comes with another added benefit as well.It allows for longer runs with COB Flex Strips. They can actually be connected end to end, as long as 2 full reels (32.8 feet)! This makes it easier for applications that require long straight runs.If you need more than 32.8 feet, remember to connect the LED strips in parallel so you don't get any voltage drops in your setup.
Cutting and Connecting
The strips can be cut just like our other strips. Please only cut along the cut marks marked on the strip every 2.46 inches. This allows you to cut the strips to custom sizes or add gaps in your application.
The strips can be used again after cutting, the best way to connect is by soldering, but if that's not an option, our EZ cob led strip Connectors do the trick.
